Denshaw Whit Friday Brass Band Contest
Meet our Adjudicator
Mr. Stephen Tighe, ARCM, LDBBA, MLIA (dip), MSFA, FPC.
Member NABBC, ABBA. & BFBB approved adjudicator.
Most of Stephen’s first class playing was as a professional trombonist in Military Bands,
Big Bands and Orchestras. He is a former member of the National Youth Orchestra and EYCO.
He became a member of the 5th Dragoon Guards Band and has toured extensively through
mainland Europe, Canada and the USA. While serving in the Army as a musician he lived in
Germany for 5 years where he was also a regular guest player for German Orchestras and
taught regularly in British Army Education Service schools in Osnabruck.
After returning to the UK he played for the then highly successful Leyland Daf Band under
Richard Evans before deciding to pursue his conducting ambitions. He retired formally from
playing in 1985 and his last proper playing job was with the Brighouse & Rastrick Band in the
RAH. (Although he was later dragged out of retirement by Ashton Under-Lyne Band and helped
them win a couple of National Titles).
He is well known in Northern England as a highly successful and respected band trainer and
conductor, having consistently been a winner with all his bands over the last 20 years. He has
been MD of Freckleton Band, the Moston & Beswick Band, the Bedford Leigh Band, the Every
Ready Band, the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band, the Kibworth Band and the Dobcross Band
helping them all to promotion or success. He has conducted at most of the major contests
including the National Finals and the All England Masters Championships. These days he
works as a freelance conductor and works with many of the areas better bands on special projects.
Recently he has spent much of his time writing and arranging his own music, some of which

Capella Music in 1999, which specialises in “tailor made” music for a wide range of groups
and ensembles. His compositions and arrangements are currently published by Jagrin’s
music publications http://www.jagrins.com and Prima Arts. www.prima-arts.co.uk. During
2004 his music was used for the Music for Youth and played at the Royal Albert Hall at the
schools promenade concerts.
He was awarded the Licentiates Diploma in Brass Band Adjudication (LDBBA) in 2001 and
is only the fourth person ever to hold this Salford University awarded, diploma. He is a
member of the Association of Brass Band Adjudicators and a BFBB approved adjudicator
for the National Championships of Great Britain.
